The Key to Happiness by Matt Young

They say money can’t buy happiness. So I ask, what is happiness? Is it a state of mind? Is it a feeling of well-being and fulfillment? Is it possible that if you were to have all the money in the world, you would still not be able to experience true joy? Life is a puzzle. Finding the missing pieces takes a lifetime. Some people never find it. Some people spend a majority of their time searching. If money isn’t the answer then what is? What is the key to happiness? What drives us to the point where we always look forward to the next day? Money can grant possessions and material value, however these tend to only give us temporary joy. As I embark on this never ending journey of twists, turns, shortcuts, and detours, I begin to wonder what the future has in store for me. I constantly paint pictures in my mind about what success will look like, but that doesn’t mean it will translate into pure happiness. There are many people who are on top of this world, yet haven’t experienced life at its fullest. Looking back I always wondered if I would even make it this far. Even up to this point I feel that I have only experienced a portion of what life has to offer. There are events that take place in my life that bring me joy and fulfillment, but nothing is everlasting. It is after reflecting on my journey that I know that I haven’t experienced true happiness. Then I come to realize that a piece of the puzzle is missing.

From Matt Young: “I am a communication studies major at San Jose State, graduating in May. I never know what the future has in store for me, so I like to take things one step at a time.”
