Pregnant Paddling by Karma Dias

I was 9 months pregnant getting off work at a cute little breakfast joint nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The plan was to go fishing with my two best friends, but I hadn’t heard from them or gotten ahold of them. The lake we were supposed to go to was close by, so I took a drive there. After I parked, I went to the little rental and snack shack by the water. I asked the boys working if they had seen two girls. They replied yes, and even told me the general direction they went but was no longer in sight. I decided to rent my own paddle boat and go searching for them. I was 9 months pregnant with a high-risk pregnancy, no cell reception, and paddling out on the lake by myself. About 30 minutes later, I see a cove with two women. I recognized the sounds of their laughter immediately and shouted out their names. Since they were in a cove, their voices carried across the lake like a microphone. I hear them say to one another, “Is that Karma?”. “No, it can’t be”. “Wait, I think it is!”. They said they had never laughed so hard at the sight of a pregnant woman paddling out in the middle of the lake to find her friends because she refused to be left out. Needless to say, I never got left out again and I enjoyed the relaxing ride back while my friends towed me in.
